A Manurewa man accused of fatally stabbing a teenager has spoken
for the first time about the night he killed Pihema Cameron.
Fifty year old Bruce Emery told the court he saw the teenager and
another boy tagging his garage.
He said he chased them, armed with a knife, but thought he had just
nicked Cameron on the shoulder.
Just hours after stabbing Cameron, Emery said he only just realised what he had done.
"Just couldn't believe it, just can't believe it... never occurred to me that he'd die...," Emery told the court.
While both the defence and the accused agree that Emery stabbed Cameron, it is how the knife was used, that is the heart of the trial.
"He more or less stepped sort of stepped into it... didn't even really think about it... I just... hand movement&" Emery tried to explain.
Emery's lawyer Chris Comeskey says Cameron and his friend forced him to act in self-defence.
"You lured the accused (Emery) into a dark part&" Comeskey questioned of the witness.
Comeskey further claimed that the teenagers acted aggressively.
"You wanted to affect his vision and his breathing& and you achieved both of those& He was choking&"
The court heard a statement from Emery's wife which said that the family had had a lot of problems with taggers, and that Emery always yelled at them, but he was never violent.
When asked what Emery intended to do with the knife while chasing Cameron, he replied "didn't intend to do anything at the time... wish I'd grabbed a broom handle or something."
Emery says he did not get help for Cameron because he did not think his injury was serious.
The High Court is moving quickly through witnesses at the murder trial in Auckland.
The jury heard from seven witnesses on Tuesday morning, as the trial entered its second day.
Among them was evidence read out from a woman who came home to find the victim lying on her driveway in the foetal position.
She said she grabbed beach towels from inside to apply pressure to his wounds but when she got back moments later he appeared already dead.
The police officer in charge of the scene also took the stand and identified several pieces of evidence including the victim's white t-shirt which is completely red with blood.
