The grave of Captain William Hobson has been defaced with a Treaty of Waitangi reference.
Hobson's gravestone in Auckland's Symonds Street has had "lies/honour tiriti" spray painted on it.
Hobson was the British officer behind the country's founding document.
He was buried at the Symonds Street location in 1842.
Auckland Council is promising to remove it.
