The wife of a New Zealand anti-whaling activist being held on a Japanese whaling boat is repeating her call for government intervention.
Pete Bethune boarded the Shonan Maru 2 in Antarctic waters in a bid to make a citizens arrest after it had collided with his own vessel.
He is now being held on board with the expectation he'll be taken back to Japan and charged with trespass.
He could face up to three years in a Japanese prison.
Sharyn Bethune says it shouldn't have got this far.
She says the New Zealand government has to stop this from happening as she contends he was only trying to get justice for the deliberate ramming of his board and threat to his crew.
Sharyn Bethune says her husband can handle himself but he hasn't been in this sort of situation before.
