A fierce hailstorm turned parts of the Bay of Plenty white this morning, with particularly heavy falls in Tauranga.
The hail was heavy enough to settle like snow for a while, making fun for some but not doing much good for the vege garden.
Te Puna locals told ONE News they heard the electrical storm getting closer at about 12:30pm and then "all of a sudden the heavens opened". They said walnut-sized hail fell for about 15 minutes and they collected over six buckets with "heaps more around".
Other parts of the northern and western parts of the North Island have experienced electrical storms. Philip Duncan at WeatherWatch said loud thunder was heard in Taranaki, Matamata, Auckland and Northland in the early hours.
