Two protesters have been injured in a clash with Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society also claims whalers are using a noise weapon against protesters that can cause deafness and vomiting.

Sea Shepherd chief Paul Watson says one activist was hurt by brass and lead balls which were hurled by the whalers at an inflatable raft launched from the protest ship, the Steve Irwin.

The second suffered bruises and cuts to his eye after being knocked off his feet by a water cannon.
