A big win for New Zealand in London.

Whale Watch Kaikoura has won the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Award.

The company has taken the supreme prize after winning its category of "best in a marine environment".

The awards are part of World Responsible Tourism Day at the World Travel Market in London.

Last year's supreme winner was Tourism New Zealand.

Whale Watch Kaikoura Chairman Wally Stone says the award is great news for the Kaikoura community and for New Zealand.

He says it will expose millions of people to Whale Watch Kaikoura.

After being nominated , Whale Watch Kaikoura chief operating officer Kauahi Ngapora described the awards as the Oscars of responsible tourism.

He says to collect a category award was a huge honour but he was "blown away" when Whale Watch was announced the Supreme winner.
