The Wellington SPCA is fighting to save the lives of a handful of local ducks, which have been accidentally poisoned.
The rescue mission comes after a local contractor accidentally polluted a Paraparaumu ducks' pond with a wood stain.
"Some of (the ducks) have ingested it...with the toxicity of that paint, it is a possibility that some of them may die," says Ritchie Dawson, Wellington SPCA.
The contractor was staining a kiosk, when he realised he had unwittingly been spraying the toxin directly into the water.
The SPCA is doing all it can to help save the ducks, their biggest problem is figuring out just how to get the hardened varnish off without causing more damage.
The ducks will stay at the SPCA until they are well enough to be in the wild again.
