A severe weather watch is in place for the West Coast of the South Island.
Metservice Duty forecaster Heath Gullery says heavy rain is expected for the Westland Ranges between Harihari and Otira, as well as for the ranges of Buller and Northwest Nelson.
Gullery says people need to look out for rising rivers and surface flooding.
Up to 300 millimetres of rain was recorded in the Westland Ranges on Wednesday but no problems were reported.
