Wellington is cleaning up after Friday night's sudden storm left houses without roofs.

Gale-forces winds took down fences and trees, and power was taken out for a time during 120 kilometre an hour wind gusts.

Train services to the Hutt Valley were cancelled and flights in and out of the capital were also delayed, with at least one flight cancelled.

A Waikanae man was flown to hospital after he was electrocuted by fallen powerlines on a road north of Wellington.

There were also reports of trapped motorists needing to be cut out of vehicles.

A woman was trapped in Carterton when a tree fell down across her car, causing minor injuries, Inspector Ian Harris said.

Several other people also received minor injuries, including a teenage boy hit by a falling tree branch at Rarangi near Blenheim, in Marlborough.

On Mt Kaukau, where radio and TV transmitters are, winds reached nearly 150 kilometres an hour.

The temperature dropped 11 degrees in half an hour when the gale force southerlies and rain ripped through.

Fine weather with northerlies is forecast for Wellington on Saturday.
