The final witness for the defence has taken the stand in the Sophie Elliott murder trial.

The defence psychiatrist, Professor Phillip Brinded, told the jury murder that the accused, Clayton Weatherston, is grossly narcissistic and showed no remorse or empathy when interviewed in prison.

"Mr Weatherston appears to lay the blame for a tumultuous relationship and also the catastrophic end to the relationship fairly firmly at the feet of Sophie Elliott," said Brinded.

Brinded said Weatherston also said he had thought about what happened so much that he was almost over it.

The Crown and defence will present their closing arguments on Monday.

Thursday was the 17th day of the trial in which Weatherston, a 33-year-old university tutor, denies the murder of Sophie Elliott, 22, at Dunedin in January 2008, by stabbing her 216 times.

He has indicated he would admit manslaughter, with the defence claiming provocation.
