Clayton Weatherston has lodged an appeal against his murder conviction, a move Sophie Elliott's father has branded "ridiculous".

The former Otago University economics tutor was last month jailed for at least 18 years for killing his ex-girlfriend.

Weatherston admitted manslaughter at the beginning of the month-long trial but denied murder.

He stabbed Sophie Elliott 216 times in her bedroom in her Dunedin home in January 2008.

Sophie's father Gil Elliott says people will be up in arms if there's another trial.
