Weather has hampered efforts to reach two climbers who activated an emergency beacon on Mt Cook on Friday.
The Rescue Co-ordination Centre received an alert at 3pm and spokesman Geoff Lunt says the beacon was registered to a Southland company that hires out emergency beacons.
The beacon had been loaned to two male tourists, aged in their twenties.
Lunt says poor visibility means they have been unable to reach the climbers and the weather is not expected to clear until Saturday morning.
