Severe weather north of Auckland and in the Far North has lifted roofs off houses, caused flooding and brought down trees and power lines.
The Fire Service was been kept busy on Sunday after dealing with more than 100 call outs in 24 hours because of the weather.
Trees were down over roads and power lines were down.
A high tide in Ruakaka, 29km southeast of Whangarei, was causing problems as it was overflowing on to the road.
Roofs were being lifted off houses and a shed had blown over.
A Vector spokeswoman says customers northwest of Auckland in Warkworth, Wellsford and Kaipara Flats were without power after trees fell on to power lines.
Northland was hit hardest by the downpours and gale force winds.
Parts of the region got almost a month's rain in 36 hours, up until noon on sunday.
The heaviest falls around Kaeo, Puhipuhi, Glenbervie and Oakura Bay.
Ice warning
Southland drivers are again being reminded to slow down and drive to the conditions.
Traffic authorities say motorists should watch for extensive ice and black ice.
Frosty conditions are expected again on Sunday night.
The icy conditions caused havoc last week with several crashes, particularly in inland areas.
A Korean tourist was killed when the bus she was in skidded on black ice near Te Anau last week.
Weather to improve
The MetService had issued a severe weather warning for Northland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, but heavy rain and severe gales were expected to ease today.
Strong winds in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, the Kaimai Ranges and Waikato were past their peak. However, gusts of 120kmh were still likely in exposed places.
It also issued a severe weather watch for Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, saying heavy rain was expected to continue until tomorrow.
In Taupo, southeast gales were expected on Sunday but should ease by the evening.
Snow showers were expected on the Desert Road, Porters Pass in Canterbury and the Rimutaka Hill Road, north of Wellington.
