A name change under Auckland's new super city has raised the ire of residents who say the new name does not reflect the area.
Locals in east Auckland say more consultation is needed before making sweeping changes.
Sharon Stewart's family has called Howick home for the past century and do not want to call it anything else.
However, under the new Auckland super city boundaries the Howick, Pakuranga, Botany ward will become Te Irirangi - named after a Maori chief.
"The name Te Irirangi doesn't really mean anything to me and I don't think it means anything to the people living in the Howick-Pakuranga district," Stewart says.
She say hundreds have signed a petition to stop the name change and more than 2,000 people have joined up online because they want to keep things as they are. Locals in Howick told ONE News that they are horrified over the name change.
Public meetings will be held this week and super mayor hopeful John Banks says if there is enough opposition it could force another name change.
