  • Wanaka snowboarders on drug charges

Two United States snowboarders, one believed to be a former Winter Olympics medallist, have been arrested in Wanaka and charged with possessing cannabis.

The duo was stopped by police during a random breath-alcohol check on Saturday and were found to have a "significant amount" of cannabis in their possession, the Otago Daily Times reported.

Both men, aged in their 20s, were due to appear in Queenstown District Court next Monday.

The pair told police they were in New Zealand as tourists.

It was not known whether they intended to compete in the New Zealand Snowboarding Open, which begins in Wanaka on August 11, or the Winter Games NZ, to be held from August 22.
