Fire safety officers are back at the scene of a suspicious fire in Waipukurau on Tuesday.

The fire at the old unoccupied Waipukurau Hospital ignited at around 2am Monday.

A fire communications officer says the blaze appears to have been lit in several different parts of the building.

Firefighters battled the blaze throughout Monday and were still putting out hotspots on Monday night.

Police aren't ruling out the possibility of a link between the fire and an armed robbery at a Kiwibank in Waipukurau on Monday morning and are appealing to the public for help.

Police are talking to people in the area and are keeping a "very open mind", Detective Glen Yule of Hastings police says.

"We're after information from anybody who may have seen people at the time around the hospital, or who after the fire had been acting a bit differently or sheepishly,"' he says.

"We're appealing to the public for any information, however small it may be, and then we can take that information and put it all together.

"It's early days, but really the key is it's the public who can solve it."
