Police working in the Waikato Serious Crash Unit are frustrated at having to deal with two avoidable road tragedies.

They blame a combination of speed, alcohol and driver inattention for two deaths on the region's roads so far in the Christmas break.

A third person was critically injured.

In one accident, a 23 year-old man was killed when a car crashed into a bank - neither he nor the driver of the car had their seat belts on.

A 84-year-old Manukau man was killed in a separate crash when he turned into the path of another car on the State Highway near Gordonton.
