The vicar of Auckland's St Matthew-in-the-City Church wants to continue displaying a controversial billboard of Mary and Joseph, despite divided opinion within the church.
It was painted over on Thursday by a man who took offence.
The billboard shows Mary and Joseph in bed with a caption Poor Joseph. God was a hard act to follow.
Archdeacon Glynn Cardy is hoping to salvage the painting or come up with the money to replace it.
He says he has not had a clear directive saying do not put up the billboard.
The Anglican church leadership says it's disappointed at the billboards insensitive nature.
What do you think of the billboard? Is it amusingly thought provoking or insulting and unecessarily provocative? Leave your comments on the messageboard below

If you've really read the bible you'd find the so-called "brothers" are James: the son of Alphaeus, Simon: the son of Cleophas, and Judas: the brother of James.

@ Auckland if you read the Bible Jesus is said to have a brother. unless you claim he was also born to a virgin (thus making him just a holy a Jesus himself) I would have to disagree with you insistence that Mary remained a virgin through out her life.

Nothing to see here, Just some fundies getting their beards in a twist because it could be interpreted the wrong way. Just give or take a month and they'll go back to protesting the teaching of Evolution in schools or the Seperation of Religion and State.

At the end of the day it comes down to interpritation. In my opinion I can see the funny side and it is good to see that the Church can poke some fun at itself and apeal to non-christians and christains alike. That has to be good right? Secondly, to those that take offence, I struggle to see how really. It does not say anything about faith, or belief etc. I think it would be much more offensive had it read "Joespeh may not be God but least hes better in bed"
