Police are asking boaties to keep their eyes peeled for a 26-year-old man feared missing in New Zealand waters.

United States national Sean D'Epagnier is believed to be sailing around New Zealand aboard his 27 foot-sailboat Alexandra but his family have not heard from him since late May.

Police are now helping the US Embassy locate the man now feared missing.

Detective Sergeant Linda Simpson said D'Epagnier had told his family he was either heading to the Fiordland area or to the Pacific Islands.

"We are urging any boaties who may have seen this sailboat recently or anyone who may know the whereabouts of D'Epagnier to come forward and contact their nearest police station," said Simpson.

D'Epagnier is 1m 75cm tall with blond hair, blue eyes and a full beard.

He is travelling in a 40-year-old Bristol sailboat that has solar panels and no engine.
