The Maritime Union says there are potential ''fish hooks'' in the Ports of Auckland's offer of a stop-work meeting if wharfies withdraw their latest strike notice.

The port and the union are embroiled in a long-running, bitter dispute over the port's move to contract out workers after negotiations over a new collective agreement failed.

Union president Garry Parsloe said it was preparing a response to the port, questioning potential limitations in how long the meeting could run and how many people could attend.

The port is due to consult union officials about their contracting-out proposal on Friday.

If the stop-work meeting went ahead, union officials would talk with members about the port's proposal and the implications of possible redundancies, Parsloe said.

While the port has said its final collective agreement offer remained on the table, it was hard to negotiate with the port when they presented a set of demands and weren't interested in negotiation.

''They have been bullying people and have become very dictatorial,'' he said.
