Two people have died after two separate car accidents in Northland on Tuesday morning.

Early on Tuesday one person lost their life in a crash on State Highway 1 at Mata, south of Whangarei.

The accident involved one car and police say three others were taken to hospital.

It is unclear how serious their injuries were.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 5.33am.

When they arrived they found a car turned upside down in a dry ditch just off the road.

Traffic was reduced to a single lane but police said it was returned to two lanes by 10am.

Another driver was killed at about 10.30 near Ruawai, south of Dargaville.

The man crashed near the corner of Tokatoka Road and State Highway 12.

Police found the car had gone off the road and one person was dead at the scene.

Nobody else was in the car and no other cars appeared to be involved in the crash.

Meanwhile, a person involved in a car crash in Kerikeri last Friday night is understood to have now died.

Emergency services were called to that incident on Stanners Road about 8pm.
