Two fires broke out in the same shopping complex in the South Auckland suburb of Otahuhu overnight.
The Fire Service says an oven caught fire in a butcher's shop in the Himalay Building on Great South Road about 7pm.
Papatoetoe senior station officer Terry Jenner says firefighters were then called to a fish and chip shop in the building about midnight.
The shop was extensively damaged.
The complex was one the first of the Foodtown supermarkets and was also used as the bar scene in the New Zealand film Once were Warriors.
A fire investigation team has been looking into the cause of the blazes but so far believe they were accidental.
