Emergency services faced a tough call out on Saturday evening at an accident involving a four-wheel drive vehicle in the Nelson area.

One man is reported to have been killed.

The vehicle rolled 20 metres into a river off the Maungatapu Track in the Maitai Valley at about 5.30pm.

Emergency services sent to the scene found access difficult and a helicopter was dispatched.

A 14-year-old boy involved in the crash, and a 24-year-old man who had tried to rescue a trapped man from the overturned vehicle, were flown to Nelson Hospital with minor injuries.

Elderly woman killed

Earlier an elderly woman became the first road fatality of the holiday weekend in a crash involving two vehicles on SH1 near 5 mile Bay in Taupo.

An 80-year-old woman died and a woman aged in her 60s is in a critical condition. The road was reduced to one lane as emergency services investigated the scene.

The National Manager of Road Policing hopes there is no repeat of last year at Labour Weekend when the toll was four.

Superintendent Paula Rose says people need to remember to drive considerately and to the conditions.
