Two dead, another seriously injured in crash

Two people have been killed and another seriously injured in a crash on State Highway Two between Whakatane and Opotiki this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene after a car and ute collided on SH2 at Nukuhou near Glenholme Road at around 6.30am.

Two occupants of the eastbound car were deceased on arrival of emergency services.

The sole occupant of the westbound ute, a man in his thirties from Opotiki, was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital where he is in a serious condition.

Police are working to identify those killed in the crash and the notify their next of kin.

The serious crash unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
