The search for two Japanese climbers missing on Mount Cook has been put on hold until Tuesday.
The pair, believed to be in their forties, failed to return on Saturday after going in to the Mount Cook National Park on Wednesday intending to cross the summit.
They were last seen on Friday on the upper Empress Plateau by two other climbers.
Senior Constable Brent Swanson says weather conditions are hampering search efforts.
He says a helicopter flew into the area on Monday morning, but had to turn back because of cloud and strong winds.
Swanson says it is hoped the search can resume Tuesday morning during a fine break in the weather.
Meanwhile, police are trying to locate next of kin.
