TVNZ has admitted it shouldn't have run a promo featuring Finance Minister Bill English.

TVNZ bosses were grilled by MPs concerned the ad for a TVNZ 7 series on the economy was a free promotion.

They said the ad was a marketing department initiative, which hadn't been vetted by news chiefs.

TVNZ says it has now changed its processes to ensure similar advertising campaigns are handled appropriately in future.
