TVNZ CEO Rick Ellis has released details of his credit card expenditure.

TVNZ yesterday confirmed Ellis spent more than $140,000 on his company credit card in the two years since June 2008 and that Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman was seeking an explanation for the expenditure.

In an email today, Ellis told TVNZ staff that Chairman Sir John Anderson had spoken with Coleman and assured him that his use of the company credit card had been "totally appropriate and responsible".

Ellis also released details of the expenditure that he said he had earlier sent to the Sunday Star Times. He said the newspaper failed to publish the information in full.

Ellis said his travel and accommodation were put on his credit card in the interests of transparency so that they could be checked and signed off by the Chairman on a monthly basis.

He said his training expenses mostly related to a workshop at the Harvard Business School in San Francisco that looked at strategies for surviving the recession and the digital age.

He also said the miscellaneous expenses mostly related to the purchase of Apple equipment for the company and not for his personal use.
