A Boston University student who was critically injured in a crash which killed three other students has spoken her first words since the accident.
Meg Theriault, 21, is now in a stable condition and recovering in a ward, Waikato Hospital said in a statement today.
When a nurse asked Meg how she was doing earlier today, the business management student replied "I want my mummy."
Her mother Deb said in the statement her daughter's progress was "heartening".
"I can't thank the staff at Waikato Hospital enough," said Deb.
"Thanks to all those people in the US who are supporting us, to those who have donated money for fundraising efforts and especially to all those people who have been praying for Meg.
"There is still a long journey ahead but today is one of those days we can look back on as being significant."
The students were on their way to Mt Tongariro when their van rolled on Lake Rotoaira Road, 10 kilometres south of Turangi.
Daniella Lekhno, 20, Roch Jauberty, 21 and Austin Brashears, 21, died at the scene.
The driver of the van, US citizen Stephen Houseman, 20, was charged with three counts of careless driving causing death and four counts of careless driving causing injury.
He appeared in the Auckland District Court last week where he was remanded without plea until his next appearance on June 8.
