Traffic on Auckland's southern motorway has "been extremely slow" this afternoon after a truck and trailer burst into flames this morning, police say.

The vehicle was travelling south when it started to smoke and caught fire, police said. There were no injuries in the incident.

Police and fire staff have cleared the scene near the Ellerslie Panmure off-ramp and traffic both south and north bound is now flowing again.

There is still a tail of traffic remaining however, and police anticipate this will be cleared by the afternoon peak hour.

Motorists are being urged to drive with caution.

Traffic was initially being funnelled through a single lane, causing a back-log of south-bound traffic, but lanes two and three have since reopened, police say.
