Dunedin student Sophie Elliott died from stab wounds to her heart and major arteries in her neck a High Court jury has heard.

University tutor Clayton Weatherston is on trial for murdering her by stabbing her 216 times.

Pathologist Martin Sage says the attack was persistent, focused and determined with both a knife and scissors.

It would have taken several minutes for the 22-year-old to die and she had a number of defence wounds he says.

The wounds on her arms and hands show she had been capable of purposeful and organised movement during the early part of the attack.

The jury heard there was heavy blood staining on her clothing and her face and neck appeared to have received multiple stab and cut wounds.

The court heard many of the wounds had been directed at disfiguring the body.

Scientist Michael Taylor says Elliott's body was dragged across her room to lie over the suitcase she was packing to leave Dunedin the next day.
