A trial date has been set for the Christchurch man charged with assault after allegedly flicking his sons' ears.

Jimmy Mason was charged in January last year after allegedly assaulting his sons aged two and four.

His two-day trial is still set down to begin on Monday.

Mason's defence is that he was disciplining his children for riding their bikes dangerously.

The charge revived debate about the anti-smacking law but police said Mason would still have been charged without that legislation.
