Napier MP Chris Tremain says it is very unlikely the government will help out Hawke's Bay coastal residents whose properties are being destroyed by erosion.

Local councils are looking to solve the issue of erosion at Haumoana, Te Awanga and Clifton by the end of this year.

There is some degree of urgency after last week's huge swells caused more damage to properties and roads.

But Tremain says the government would be reluctant to help, because it's an issue that's affecting thousands of people around the country.
