The Tree Council claims proposed changes to environmental laws are a step backwards.
The government is planning amendments to the Resource Management Act which mean landowners could cut down any tree on their land unless it is listed in the council's district plan.
Tree Council chairwoman Sigrid Shayer is urging people to consider what the landscape would be like if the law change went through.
She says it would mean an open slather to developers to clear-fell and not be obliged to replant.
The council says it's especially worried about clauses 52 and 151 which it says will prohibit local authorities from protecting trees in the urban environment.
Shayer says the change is a green light for developers to wantonly disregard the ecological and aesthetic value of trees.
