Two trampers are missing in the Waitakere Ranges in Auckland after not returning from a day-tramp.

Police say the two men, aged in their 50s and 60s, set off from Waiatarua at 8am and were due back at 3 this afternoon.

The pair are experienced trampers, and Search and Rescue was sent out at 7.30 after they did not return.

Police northern communications Inspector Lou Alofa says he's concerned about them because of the wet conditions and the fact they were not prepared to spend the night in the bush.

Nightfall is yet another concern.

Alofa says search and rescue teams are assessing their next move.
