Search teams are attempting to rescue two injured trampers from Te Matawai Hut in the Tararua Ranges.

Police report that the trampers are part of a group of three teenage girls and an adult that walked to the hut from Mangahao Dam yesterday.

It is believed that two of the trampers have injured knees and are unable to walk out.

Andy Brooke from Palmerston North Search and Rescue says that a helicopter attempted to drop a team member at the hut today, but the flight was hindered by cloud and rain.

The search and rescue team member was only able to be taken as far as South Ohau Hut.

He will complete the remaining 3km to Te Matawai Hut on foot, and will help guide the teenagers out of the bush tomorrow, Brooke said.

Police will wait for a break in the weather before attempting to rescue the injured pair who are comfortable at the hut with sufficient food and equipment.
