Trampers are being urged to let people know where they are going to avoid the possibility of thousands of dollars in rescue costs.

Police say more than $10,000 was spent tracking a 23-year-old Otaki man at the weekend who had gone hunting in the Tararua Ranges and failed to come out on the specified day.

Sergeant Jo Holden says once the alarm was raised, the search was hampered because the man had not told anyone where he was going.

He didn't sign any hut books, nor have a cellphone or a radio with him.

Holden says the man was found dehydrated and confused on Saturday afternoon.
