Two trampers cut off by a swollen river were rescued by helicopter near Murchison in the South Island.
The Rescue Coordination centre in Wellington called out the Nelson Marlborough Rescue helicopter after the couple activated their locator beacon this evening.
The helicopter trust says the couple from Christchurch were nearing the end of a tramp in the Lake Matiri area near Murchison when the river the were following become swollen and cut them off returning to the Matiri Lake carpark.
The couple headed back towards a hut but faced the same scenario and fading daylight.
They activated their locator beacon and were rescued by the helicopter which took them safely to their vehicle.
