Holiday traffic caused major problems for people trying to enjoy the good weather north of Auckland on Saturday.
The New Zealand Transport Agency says morning traffic was heavy on State Highway 1 north of Auckland, near Warkworth, with midday peaks leaving a queue of slow-moving traffic several kilometres long near Warkworth.
On Saturday afternoon traffic was flowing smoothly.
Narrower lanes and speed restrictions in work zones added to the
problems, in what's a traditional holiday congestion spot.
Motorists were advised to get past traditional holiday congestion areas by using SH16 as an alternative route to Wellsford and further north.
Agency spokesman Ewart Barnsley says motorists were kept up to date by electronic roadside messages.
Drivers were being urged to remain patient on the roads.
The long weekend also marks the introduction of volunteer surf lifesaving patrols on most city beaches.
During the week, beaches are patrolled by paid lifeguards but during the weekend volunteer lifeguards look after the beaches.
