Toxic ooze is being cleaned off a Lower Hutt road following a spill on Thursday morning.
The sludge was being transported from the polluted Waiwhetu Stream to a landfill in Silverstream when the truck carrying it lost some of its load.
Regional council spokesman Graeme Campbell says the spill equates to around two wheelbarrow loads and contains fairly high levels of zinc, lead and chromium.
He says it's unfortunate the spill comes so soon after tests confirmed Greater Wellington had contaminated part of a cleanfill with lead.
