The German tourist who died after a motorcycle crash on State Highway 4 near Wanganui yesterday has been named.
Hans Jurgen Zech, 52, was on a motorcycle tour of New Zealand with his wife and friends.
The fatal crash happened around 1.30pm yesterday as the tourists were travelling north on SH4, on a section of the road known as the Para Para's.
The group of motorcycles had just passed through a section of roadworks, which is controlled by traffic lights forcing all traffic into the south bound lane.
At the end of the roadworks the group moved back to the left with the exception of Zech. To avoid an oncoming south-bound vehicle Zech swerved, crashing as a result, police said.
Ambulance attended the scene and transported Zech to Whanganui Hospital where he died late yesterday evening.
An investigation is continuing into the crash, and police said the matter will be referred to the coroner in due course.
