A 54-year-old Canadian tourist has been charged with careless driving after a head-on collision between his mini van and a tour bus in Wellington on Tuesday left five people injured.

The crash took place on a sharp left hand curve at Point Jerningham, in Oriental Bay, about 11.30am, Strategic Traffic Unit Sergeant Mark Moody says.

Five bus passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The Canadian, the sole occupant of the mini van, also suffered minor injuries.

Moody says he has been charged with careless driving causing injury and would will appear in Wellington District Court on Wednesday.

Police would still like to speak to anyone who saw the crash.

The bus was taking 12 foreign nationals on a day tour of the city.
