High quality alcohol could be on the black market after a daring burglary of one of Auckland's top liquor stores.
Stolen overnight from a central Auckland fine wine shop was $250,000 of rare pinot noir, vintage champagne, and cognac, in what looks suspiciously like a burglary for order.
"The thieves cut the wires, and disabled all the alarms; if they could not get at something, they just broke it and cut it," says Jak Jekesevich of Glengary Wines.
It was not a quick smash and grab, and Jekesevich believes the alcohol was stolen to order.
"Gone straight to where the vintage champagnes were, they knew exactly where they would find the Winston Churchill, the Louis Tres cognac which is $4,000 a bottle," he says.
Liz Wheadon was first at work on Tuesday morning.
"Oh the Don Perignon, it was a three litre jeroboam of Don Perignon encased in white gold that was sitting right there, one bottle in Australasia," she says.
And it was worth a mere $14,000.
"I'm hanging in there. Yeah, we'll just have to knuckle down and clean up and start stock taking again, it'll take us a while to count this entire shop," says Jekesevich
The police say if there is no market for stolen goods then crimes like this would not happen.
"These wines are so rare that someone is going to see them out there," says Jekesevich.
And he is fighting back.
"I'm offering $10,000 to somebody who can give us some information leading to the recovery of these wines," he says.
Like the police Jekesevich wants to know who these two brazen burglars are.
