Police say it is too early to say whether charges will be laid following a post-mortem on a dead baby found in a Lower Hutt backyard.
The baby girl was found wrapped in a towel at the back of a Taita Drive property on Monday morning. Police said the girl was about a day old and still had part of her umbilical cord attached.
"It will take some time to establish the exact circumstances of this baby girl's birth," Inspector Shane Cotter said after a post-mortem was completed on the body.
"It is far too early to speculate on whether any charges will be laid in relation to this incident and until further inquiries are completed, we will not be making any further comment."
A woman in her early 20s was identified as the mother of the baby girl yesterday.
She has been hospitalised and is being treated for complications as a result of the birth, police said.
Police inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the baby's birth are continuing.
