Timeline: NZ's worst aviation disasters

Today's hot air balloon crash is the seventh deadliest in New Zealand aviation history.

Other significant air crashes include:

1942 - Fourteen passengers were killed after a bomber crashed near Whenuapai airbase.

1944 - Two bombers with 14 on board went missing off the coast of New Zealand and were never seen again.

1948 - Thirteen people were killed when a plane crashed into Mt Ruapehu.

1949 - Fifteen people were killed when a cargo plane heading to Paraparaumu crashed on the ridge behind Waikanae.

1963 - A passenger plane flying from Whenuapai Airport to Tauranga crashed into a rock face in the Kaimai Ranges, killing all 23 on board.

1979 - 257 people were killed when an Air NZ plane crashed into the side of Mt Erebus in Antarctica.

2010 - A parachuting flight at Fox Glacier crashed shortly after take-off, killing all nine on board.
