Tickertape parade for Olympic sailing heroes

Published: 9:50AM Thursday August 16, 2012 Source: ONE News

Olympic sailing heroes Blair Tuke and Peter Burling are being welcomed in Northland today with a ticker tape parade in Kerikeri.

The pair won silver in the 49er class in the Olympic regatta, and thousands were expected to welcome them back home this afternoon.

Their medal was the 100th to be won by New Zealand at the Olympics.

Tuke is part of the Kerikeri cruising club, and his club mate Andrew Murdoch who finished fifth in the lasers at the Olympics, is also be part of the parade.

As many as 2000 schoolchildren were expected to boost the crowds in the small Northland town, and people were being urged to wear black and white and bring confetti or tickertape to throw.

The weather forecast was for showers in the area today, but Tuke told his Facebook followers that should be no problem.

"Forecast looks ok. See you this afternoon Kerikeri!"
