Heavy showers and possible thunderstorms are expected to linger over Auckland and the Coromandel this morning.

MetService has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the area and warns that downpours could reach 25 to 40mm per hour which could cause flash flooding in low lying areas and slips.

Forecasters said they were unsure about where the rain would be heaviest but expected it to ease later this morning.

Patchy rain is expected to continue affect the areas until next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, heavy rain that was falling in the eastern Bay of Plenty and Gisborne on Tuesday has since moved on.

But MetService warns there is a chance the storms that are affecting Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel could also bring more heavy rain to the east of the North Island too.
