A thunder storm boasting gale force winds and heavy rain caused havoc throughout Fiordland National Park overnight.

The storm blew in in the early hours of Monday morning with strong winds, heavy rain and thunder.

The sole road into Milford Sound is cut off due to large slips and it is likely to remain closed for the next few days.

Up to 200 trampers are also stranded in huts on the well known Milford and Routeburn tracks due to tree falls.

Department of Conservation Visitor Asset manager Ross Kerr says they have checked with all their rangers on the Great Walks and as far as they know everyone on the tracks is safe.

He says there was 150 millimetres of rain overnight on the Milford Track and gale force winds elsewhere.
