Police investigating the death of a man during a violent drinking session in Hamilton have made three arrests.
A homicide investigation began after the discovery of the body of a 28-year-old man at a house in suburban Chartwell early on Thursday.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall says three men have been arrested so far but to date no-one has been charged with murder, though further charges are likely.
"A man appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday (Thursday) charged with possession of an offensive weapon related to yesterday's incident.
"Another man was arrested for assaulting our victim and will appear in court today while a third man was arrested for breaching bail and will also be appearing today."
Several items found at the scene are currently undergoing forensic examination.
The body of the 28-year-old victim was removed from the scene on Thursday following a karakia from his family.
A post-mortem is to be carried out in Auckland.
Meanwhile, residents in the Chartwell street say gang members would often visit the house where the man died.
They say parties are often held at the house throughout the week, with late-night drinking and fighting spilling out onto the street.
Chenella Marsters, who has lived in Bellmont Ave for nine years, says she thought something terrible might happen and says members of local gang, Westside Outlaws, often visit the house and drink.
Over the past several months, the drinking and fighting has increased.
Marsters has told the Waikato Times she brought up 11 children while living in the street and there never used to be any trouble.
She says the party stopped about three hours before the attack when a group of men returned to the house.
She says a friend tried to stop the house occupant from being hit over the head with a hammer.
