People trying to raise awareness of climate change have taken to the streets of Wellington and Auckland.

Demonstrators in the capital set their own targets for Prime Minister John Key, as he prepares to head to Copenhagen for a major international climate conference.

About 1,000 people marched on parliament calling for emissions cuts of 20% by 2020.

Thousands of people also gathered in a central Auckland park for a special concert to highlight the issue.

The free concert featured bands and celebrities including Opshop, Midnight Youth, Lucy Lawless and Rhys Darby.

Just before 6.00pm, the crowd was encouraged to perform a mass haka.
