Telecom says it will not be making any announcements on compensation for XT mobile customers until next week.

The network has been down in several parts of the country since Wednesday, angering thousands of customers and sparking calls for compensation.

Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds says technicians have been working methodically and professionally throughout Friday to restore cell sites, one by one.

There are currently about 23 sites without service.

The remaining affected sites are all in the lower South Island, including Timaru, Invercargill, Dunedin and Queenstown, and a number of sites across rural Southland, Otago and South Canterbury.

The sites most recently restored are in Dunedin.

Reynolds says it is hoped they will be up and running by Saturday morning.

"The clear signal we have had from customers is that they want the issue resolved, so that has been our full focus. Now we have a clear plan, the time is right to think about compensation.

"We will be announcing compensation plans for significantly affected customers early next week."
